The museum was opened in 1992 houses paintings on Sikh history ranging from portraits of the Sikh Gurus, the Sikh scholars, paintings relating to Sikh rule in the Panjab in the 19th Century and the persecution of the Sikhs.

28 November 1992

The foundation of the museum was laid with the installation of the model of the Golden Temple on 28 November 1992 by five Sikhs at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Leicester.

 

1993

In this year the museum won third Heritage Award organised by Leicester Mercury and Leicestershire County Council.

1994

The mamgement Committee of the museum was formed in 1994 with the members Mr Sarup Singh (President), Mr. Jagpal Singh (General Secretary), Mr. Balbir Singh (Assistant Treasurer), Mr. Ranjit Singh Jassal Treasure), Mr. Sarbjit Singh (Assistant Secretary) and Mr. Karam Singh (Vice President)

In June the museum achieved full registration and became the first registered Sikh Museum in Europe

This year marked the 300th Anniversery of foundation of Khalsa and the museum hosted an Exhibition in the museum and another Khalsa Exhibition was supported in the New Walk Museum by Leicester Museum Service.

Leicester Mercury Report 28.11.2002 on launch of Web Site and 10th anniversary

 

2002

The museum was visited on 1August by the Queen. Museum celebrated the 10th anniversary on 28 November. This website was launched. In November Heritage Exhibition was held.In November Heritage Exhibition was held. In December the museum was awarded a three year grant by Heritage Lottery Fund to provide Education Service.
