Guru Gobind Singh Ji realised the importance of literature in enhancing the character of the Sikhs. He was a great poet himself and his compositions are contained in 'Dasam Granth'. He transmitted inspiration through the living language literature. He fought many battles against the opperssive rulers to defend the faith and his whole family was martyred. On 7th Oct. 1708, before merging into the infinite at Nanded, in the south of India, he declared that the 'Holy Granth' would be the 'Guru' of the Sikhs for ever, after him.
